Information on Dreams

Why do we Dream?

The meaning of dreams are unknown, but they have been recorded in history as far back as 4000-3000 B.C. They were thought to be very important in the past, and those who had vivid dreams, or could interpret were thougt to be highly gifted. 6 years of our lives are spent dreaming, and we can't even understand why. The brain waves are more active in dreaming than in wakefulness, and most dreaming occurs during the REM stage where they are the easiest to remember.

Types of dreams that occur:

Daydreams happen 70-120 minutes a day. It is during wakefulness, but is considered to be a level of consciousness between being asleep and being awake, because awareness to the world decreases considerabley. It is a natural thing for everyone.
Lucid dreams are when you are dreaming and realize that it is a dream. Most people wake themselves when they lucid dreams, but others can control it and do things that they could not do in life, like fly, fall, etc.
Nightmares are disturbing dreams that cause anxiousness and/or fear. They may be a response to a real life trauma or exprience. They seem to serve as a "wake up call" for any problems that may be occuring in life.
Recurring Dreams are dreams that repeat with little variation each time. They can be positive dreams, but more often they are nightmares of situations that the dreamer has not worked out yet.
Prophetic dreams (or Precognitive Dreams) are dreams that are believed to reveal something about the future. This is thought to be possible through the idea that the "dreaming mind" can piece together clues about the real life that the "wake mind" can't, and be able to see what is going to happen.
Epic dreams are are any dreams that are so big and compelling that they stay with the dreamer for a long time afterwards. They are noted because they are so vivid.

Tips to Remember Dreams:

It is important to try to remember and analyze your dreams because they can teach you about yourself and the issues that you are having trouble working out in your life. To remember them, you should be sure to clear your mind completely before trying to sleep. You must also be positive that you WILL remember the dreams that you have. This is proven to help people remember. It also helps to have regular bed and wake times. Having a schedule helps to have good sleep habits and will result in better sleep, and more remembered dreams. Also, it is a good idea to keep a recorder, or a pen and paper by your bed so that if you wake up in the night, or in the morning, you can write down whatever you remember. Because, it is thought that after 5 minutes of dreaming 1/2 of it is forgotten, and after 10 minutes, 90% is lost making it best to think about your dreams right after they happen. This aids in the rememberance process.
